Collection of autograph letters of private John William Chorlton serving in the 1st/8th Bn. Manchester Regiment sent to his friend in Manchester from his embarkation in Southhampton at the 10th of septembre 1914 untill his arrival in Alexandria Egypt at the 25th septembre 1914. The letters incidently refer to the training in camp Littleborough near Hollingworth lake before embarking in Southhampton, the conditions during seavoyage and the arrival in Alexandria at 25th september 1914, but are mainly about family circumstances. His final destination would be Gallipoli, where he was killed in action on 4 june 1915 during the third attempt to defeat the Turkish army.
